Web Design for US Businesses — What a New York Agency Costs, and What's the Alternative?

Summary

A professionally designed custom website from a mid-market US agency costs $10,000–$15,000 for a 5–10 page site, with New York and Los Angeles agencies typically running higher. Hawd Design is a nearshore web design agency serving US businesses from Sarajevo, Bosnia — delivering the same technical quality, ADA/WCAG 2.1 AA compliance, and professional process as a comparable US agency at 30–40% below those rates. Website packages start from approximately $5,300. SEO retainers from approximately $1,620/month. EST afternoon overlap: we schedule all US calls in our afternoon (12:00–17:00 CET), which corresponds to 06:00–11:00 EST. Senior English-speaking team. 90-day post-launch warranty. Free discovery call with no obligation.

Comparative economics

The US Market Value Proposition — Quality Without the New York Price Tag

The United States has the most competitive web design market in the English-speaking world. New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Chicago agencies charge $100–$200/hr — not because the quality of their output is categorically superior, but because their operational costs demand those rates. Hawd Design delivers senior-level engagement at €65–85/hr (~$70–$92/hr) without reduction in team quality, process rigour, compliance standards, or technology stack.

Service US Mid-Market Rate Hawd Design (approx. USD) Saving

Business Website (10 pages) $15,000–$25,000 ~$10,200 ~35–60%
Enterprise / Web App $25,000–$150,000+ ~$19,400+ ~25–40%
SEO Growth Retainer $2,500–$5,000/month ~$2,700/month ~20–45%
Brand Identity System $5,000–$25,000 ~$4,500+ ~25–50%

Legal compliance

ADA Compliance — The US Legal Context

The volume of ADA website accessibility lawsuits filed in US federal courts has increased dramatically over the past decade. Law firms specialising in accessibility litigation have institutionalised the practice of scanning business websites for WCAG failures and sending demand letters. The average cost of defending an ADA accessibility lawsuit — even one that settles — runs into tens of thousands of dollars. The cost of building an accessible website at the outset is a fraction of that.

What WCAG 2.1 AA Compliance Covers in Every Hawd Design Build

  • Colour contrast: Minimum 4.5:1 ratio for normal text, 3:1 for large text (18pt+ or 14pt bold), and 3:1 for interactive UI components and graphical objects
  • Keyboard navigation: All interactive elements — navigation, forms, buttons, modals — fully operable without a mouse, in a logical tab order
  • Screen reader compatibility: Semantic HTML with proper heading hierarchy, ARIA landmark roles (main, nav, aside, footer), descriptive alt text for all informative images, form labels programmatically associated with inputs
  • Focus indicators: Clearly visible focus states on all focusable elements; we do not use outline: none without providing a custom visible alternative
  • No content relying solely on colour: Status messages, error states, and instructional content conveyed through text or icons alongside colour
  • Video accessibility: Captions for all pre-recorded video content; transcripts for audio-only content
  • Resize and reflow: Content readable and operable at 200% zoom without horizontal scrolling; responsive design that reflows at 320px width

For US healthcare, legal, and government clients requiring Section 508 compliance documentation, we provide a formal WCAG 2.1 AA audit report with success criterion mapping and a remediation log.

Sector expertise

US Industry-Specific Compliance — We Speak Your Sector's Language

Four high-value US sectors with specific regulatory and technical requirements — all addressed within our standard delivery process.

Legal

Law Firms — ABA Rule 7.1 Compliance

ABA Model Rule 7.1 prohibits false or misleading communications. State bar advertising rules vary materially — California, Florida, Texas, and New York each have their own overlay. Our law firm website builds address:

  • Attorney biographies accurately representing credentials without prohibited superlatives
  • Case result and testimonial sections with required disclaimers positioned per state bar requirements
  • Clear identification of supervising attorney on all pages containing legal information
  • Avvo and SuperLawyers badge integration for verified credentials only
  • Required "Attorney Advertising" notices where mandated by state bar rules

Healthcare

Healthcare Providers — HIPAA-Aware Architecture

US healthcare websites collecting patient information must address HIPAA's requirements around Protected Health Information (PHI). Our technical layer covers:

  • Contact and patient enquiry forms using TLS 1.3 encrypted transmission only
  • Form tool configuration with available BAAs (JotForm HIPAA, specific HubSpot configurations)
  • Analytics and session recording tool anonymisation settings (Google Analytics, Hotjar) to exclude PHI capture
  • Full data flow documentation in technical handover package

B2B SaaS

B2B SaaS and Startups

US B2B SaaS buyers expect specific UI patterns and integrations that signal technical credibility. Our builds include:

  • Bento grid layouts for feature presentations and above-the-fold value propositions
  • HubSpot and Salesforce CRM integration with qualified demo request forms feeding directly into pipelines
  • Framer-prototyped rapid iteration for early-stage landing pages
  • Core Web Vitals scores meeting Google thresholds (LCP < 2.5s, INP < 200ms, CLS < 0.1)
  • Investor-facing aesthetic — clean, high-information-density UI

E-Commerce

E-Commerce — US Market Requirements

US e-commerce builds require specific attention to payment, tax, compliance, and accessibility requirements:

  • Stripe integration with full Stripe Radar fraud management settings for US DTC and B2B
  • US state-specific sales tax display calculated at checkout — not included in displayed prices
  • FTC and state consumer protection disclosures: return policies, seller identification, shipping expectations
  • ADA-compliant checkout flows — keyboard-navigable, screen-reader compatible, descriptive error states
  • Shopify Markets for US brands selling into multiple countries from a single store

All decisions confirmed in writing with searchable history — no information lost in calls.

Messages sent during US business hours (09:00–17:00 EST) arrive in our inbox overnight and are addressed at the start of our following CET business day — typically within 8–10 hours of receipt. This model is not an apology for the timezone; it is a deliberately designed workflow that many US clients — particularly those frustrated by agencies requiring synchronous availability for every decision — find more efficient than the alternative.

FAQ

Questions from US Clients

The most common questions we receive from US businesses before starting a project.

How much does a website cost for a US business in 2026?

A professionally designed custom website from a mid-market US agency typically costs $10,000–$15,000 for a 5–10 page business site, with New York and Los Angeles agencies often running higher. Hawd Design delivers equivalent quality at 30–40% below those rates: Starter Website from approximately $5,300 (5 pages, responsive, SEO-ready, ADA/WCAG 2.1 AA compliant), Business Website approximately $10,200 (10 pages, full custom UI/UX), and Enterprise from $19,400+. All prices are EUR-denominated; USD equivalents fluctuate with exchange rates.

Do you invoice in USD?

Our invoices are denominated in EUR. US clients pay in EUR or via international wire transfer at the prevailing exchange rate on the invoice date. We do not currently issue USD-denominated invoices, but the EUR/USD conversion is transparent and documented on each invoice.

Can you handle HIPAA requirements for a US healthcare website without being a covered entity?

We are not a HIPAA-covered entity and do not handle PHI in our delivery process. Our role is to build the technical architecture that a covered entity's website requires: encrypted form transmission, analytics anonymisation, and integration with HIPAA-compliant third-party tools. The covered entity's compliance obligations — BAAs with their vendors, policies and procedures — remain with the client.

Do you offer payment in instalments for US clients?

Yes. The standard payment structure — 40% at contract signature, 40% at design approval, 20% at launch — applies to US clients as to all others. For Enterprise projects, a four-payment schedule is available. All payments are in EUR at the prevailing exchange rate on the date of each instalment invoice.

Can you build a Shopify store for a US-based DTC brand?

Yes. We build Shopify stores for US DTC brands including: product page CRO optimisation, Stripe payment integration with fraud management settings, US state sales tax display at checkout, ADA-compliant checkout flows, and Core Web Vitals optimisation for product-heavy pages. We also implement Shopify Markets for brands selling into multiple countries from a single Shopify store.
